Garlic's Memory Claim Rests on Just 20 People

Thai Garlic · กระเทียม · Allium sativum

Thai Garlic — กระเทียม (kra-thiam) — Allium sativum.

In one twenty-person controlled trial, a garlic supplement improved visual-memory and attention scores. The study tested a supplement, while Thai cooking uses the bulb. Garlic provides vitamin B6, manganese, vitamin C, and selenium. Moo Gratiem tosses pork with pounded garlic and white pepper in a hot wok, while Kratiem Dong pickles whole cloves for curries and relishes. Let crushed garlic rest for ten minutes before heating so its sulfur chemistry can develop. High-dose garlic supplements can increase bleeding risk, so tell your doctor before surgery.

Moo Gratiem — หมูกระเทียม (moo-gra-tiem)
Kratiem Dong — กระเทียมดอง (gra-tiem-dong)

Food and nutrients

Rich in: vitamin B6, manganese, vitamin C, selenium

Research context

Garlic improved visual memory and attention in a small controlled trial — Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2015

Safety note. Concentrated garlic supplements may add to bleeding risk with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs; consider stopping supplements ~7 days before surgery.

Narration transcript

Opening

A whole garlic clove is almost odorless. Its famous punch only appears the moment you crush it, when two compounds kept apart in the clove slam together and form allicin, the sharp, hot molecule behind that smell. Garlic — กระเทียม, kra-thiam. You eat the cloves raw or cooked, and the green shoots too.

Moo Gratiem (หมูกระเทียม)

Moo gratiem is a savory Thai stir-fry that tosses pork with aromatic pounded garlic and white pepper, served over warm jasmine rice with crisp cucumber slices.

Kratiem Dong (กระเทียมดอง)

Kratiem dong is Thai pickled garlic, a traditional preparation of whole cloves in a sweet-and-sour brine, commonly used to flavor northern Thai curries.

Nutrition summary

Gram for gram, raw garlic is rich in vitamin B6 and manganese — though a clove or two adds only a small share.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 contributes to normal energy metabolism, supports a healthy nervous system, and helps your body make red blood cells.

Manganese

Manganese helps the body use food for energy and maintain normal connective tissue.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is used to build collagen and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Selenium

Selenium is part of your natural antioxidant defenses, supports normal thyroid function, and contributes to a healthy immune system.

Closing

Plant a single clove and it multiplies underground into a whole new bulb. Crush the cloves and let them rest ten minutes before cooking, so that allicin can build before the heat. And if you take blood thinners, high-strength garlic supplements can add to bleeding risk, so check with your doctor before surgery. Follow Longevity Biome, and LIKE this video for regular updates.
