Banana Blossom: Why Cooks Peel It to the Heart

Banana Blossom — หัวปลี (hua-plee) — Musa × paradisiaca (ABB group).

Thai cooks peel away the tough purple bracts of banana blossom — หัวปลี, hua-plee — to reach the pale, tender heart. In animal studies and lab assays, Musa inflorescence extracts showed antioxidant effects and changes in blood-glucose measures. Opening

That heavy purple teardrop hanging at the end of a banana bunch is the plant's flower, the banana heart. Banana blossom — หัวปลี, hua-plee. Thai cooks peel back the tough outer bracts to reach the pale, tender heart inside, then shred it raw or simmer it soft. That pale core is the part you eat.

Yam Hua Plee (ยำหัวปลี)
