Wax Apple: The Crisp Pink Bell You Eat Whole
Wax Apple / Rose Apple · ชมพู่ · Syzygium samarangense
Wax Apple / Rose Apple — ชมพู่ (chom-phoo) — Syzygium samarangense.
It looks like a glossy pink bell and bites like crisp, watery snow. Barely sweet. The edible part is the fruit. Lab and animal tests used wax apple polyphenols against starch-digesting enzymes. It's a source of vitamin C. Yam Chomphu Kung is a local Thai salad combining crisp wax apple and fresh shrimp in a tangy dressing, served with rich massaman curry. Chomphu Nam Pla Wan features fresh wax apple wedges dipped in a sweet, savory, and spicy chili sauce, traditionally enjoyed as a midday snack. The crisp fruit is eaten whole, skin and all, and it's mostly water. Light and refreshing rather than nutrient-dense. Keep the tree pruned to a manageable 8-foot height.
